Another says that he offers her “a magic house that does not need to be cleaned, and the food cooks itself too”. They are dedicated to their mothers, and one reads “Mom, I would like to give you Dad, who is prisoner, but I don’t know how to draw a prison camp”. And she offers us a heart wrenching anecdote when selecting a few of the drawings that the children have stuck on the walls of the arcaded building. The square is often empty of people, there is no water in the central shallow basin, and she misses the children playing there in the afternoon. She also writes of the position of women in society, which drastically changed during and particularly after WW1, when they refused to play the roles, they had played before. Like for example, on her love of books and writing – she tells us how from the age of six she was allowed unrestricted access to a copious library with volumes that were perhaps not suitable for her age. With no obvious structure she comments on this and that. This is no joyful reading in some aspects although the wisdom that exudes from the lines of the book, is magical. Simpleton me, I had not realized she wrote this during the 1940s, when she had become a frustrated spectator of the war shadows as they made themselves felt in the centre of the city. I was struck by the idea that she had lived in that beautiful square during her last years and thought about what it would have been like to look down into the square from one of those windows.
